You can do the upholstery work yourself, but you’ll
spend a good deal of time trying to get it to look just the way you
want. As mentioned previously, you can hire out just the upholstering
part of this task for about $75. A professional upholsterer will get
it done right the first time in about an hour and a half, and it will
look first rate. Shop around in your local area for reputable upholstery
shops. $50 per hour is a fair price for labor to install the railing
cover.
If you choose to do it yourself, by all means, give it
a go! Keep in mind though that the difficulty level of the upholstering
piece of these plans is substantially higher than the rest of the tasks
in these plans. It’s absolute murder on you hands and you will
need to be very patient and take plenty of breaks.
Fortunately, the Naugahyde option is roughly the same
cost as going with the pre-cut padded railing, give or take $15. While
I use and refer to black Naugahyde throughout this section, you can
substitute in materials such as real leather, vinyl, velvet, or any
others. You may choose any color or grain of material you wish. Of course,
the price will vary with different materials, so be aware of what you
want to spend and then choose a material that suits your budget.
