Building
a Poker Table
Unless
you’re willing to spend several thousand dollars on an authentic
poker table, we strongly recommend the do it yourself route as most
all of the Texas Holdem poker tables you’ll find on the web
in the $500 to $1000 price range are pretty poor quality. The reality
is you can build a poker table of much higher quality and durability
for $200 to $300. Furthermore, due to the high weight and thus shipping
costs involved when purchasing poker tables, you’ll usually
end up spending $200 to $300 just to crate and ship the table.
On a do-it-yourself poker
table project, the single most important (yet often marginalized)
quality element will be the quality of your poker table felt. After
spending a day or more constructing a really solid table, novice
poker table builders often make the mistake of topping the whole
project off with standard wool felt, billiard cloth, velveteen,
or some other material that happens to be available at the local
fabric store because they simply don’t know what the casinos
actually use. In addition to creating a completely different look
for your table, these substituted felts run the gamut on playability,
and more often than not restrict the ability to slide cards effectively
during the deal.
If you are building a
poker table from scratch, do yourself a favor and don’t skimp
on the poker table felt. If you already have a poker table, consider
ripping off the old felt and replacing it with the same poker table
felt used at casinos. You’ll be amazed at the difference in
playability.
